Writing Class: Assignment 4 – A poem

Our assignment this week is to bring anything. Kind of hard to meet that lofty requirement, but as I sat down to write, the only thing I can hear is the thump, thump, thump of my sons’ tennis shoes in the dryer. There are four of them in there right now making themselves dizzy after a weekend romp in the mud. Fortunately I own a washer and dryer now, but this poem was inspired by the days when I did have to go to the Laundromat on a regular basis.

Spinning
dryersOn a certain Tuesday night
characters meet at the Laundromat
flip flops shush along yellowed linoleum
quarters jingle
quarters jangle
zippers slam dryer walls
sitcoms buzz absent ears
sheets flap themselves into folds

On a certain Tuesday night
characters meet at the Laundromat
helping the Laundromat family
make a living
one quarter jingle
two quarters jangle
at a time
